Abu Dhabi's cultural skyline is about to gain another landmark. Construction has officially begun on Dar al Funoon Abu Dhabi, or House of the Arts, a major performing arts institution rising on Saadiyat Island and set to open its doors in 2030.

The project has been announced by the Department of Culture and Tourism Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) as part of the emirate's long-term push to strengthen its cultural landscape. 

Designed by the late Frank Gehry, one of the most influential architects of his generation, Dar al Funoon is among his final works. True to his signature style, the building takes on flowing, fabric-like forms that appear to drape and billow over the structure, described by its creators as a living expression of music and performance.

Inside Dar al Funoon

Dar al Funoon is being built as a year-round destination, with performances and cultural activities planned across all 365 days of the year. 

The venue will house a performance hall with more than 2,000 seats, a 3,500-seat open-air amphitheater, a 400-seat studio theater, and a 250-seat jazz venue, bringing its total capacity to more than 6,000 guests.

Programming will span opera, ballet, theater, jazz, and contemporary productions, alongside long-term artist residencies, international touring partnerships, and co-productions with performing arts institutions from around the world. 

The project also aligns with Abu Dhabi's status as a UNESCO Creative City of Music, a designation it has held since 2021.

Saadiyat Island’s Cultural Transformation

Dar al Funoon will sit beside the Saadiyat Cultural District, joining an already formidable lineup of institutions that includes Louvre Abu Dhabi, the upcoming Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, Zayed National Museum, Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, and teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi.
